Yes, by "institution," I mean 'an established law, practice, or custom.'
By obsolete, I mean the property of being out of date.

Essentially, I find gender to be a custom that is no longer necessary due to the progression of society. Rather than hold standards to individuals because of the genitalia they were born with, an individual should have the right to determine who they are based on what they want for themselves without society judging them based on what they perceive to be truth.

It is my opinion that rather than subject people to specific standards, we instead let them define themselves without the need for labels such as 'male' or 'female.'

Hmm... so do you think most of the perceived differences between males and females (aggresivs vs passive, "rugged" vs. "petite", etc.) are only the result of social conditioning and other such enviornmental factors? Do you not think being born as a male tells you anything about how a person is going to behave in comparison to if they were born a female?
I mean, i'm all for using more accurate descriptions than one word labels, and of course there's huge amounts of variation within genders, but do you not think there are some shared personality characters amongst males and amongst females that would have existed regardless of societies expectations? Because if so the labels "male" and "female" may still be useful.

I believe that an over abundance of certain hormones cause those traits, which are linked to bodily sex rather than gender. Further more, finding a rugged female or a gentle male is hardly unheard of, particularly in this day and age.
As a matter of fact, although hormones do bring about different traits in people, social conditioning is also a piece of the overall puzzle. At least, that's how I perceive society.

If we were to stop seeing people as male or female (at least, in gender) I believe there would be more variation. Not to say that aggressive females wouldn't still be outnumbered by aggressive males (and vice versa)
Being born into a certain sex still rules that, more often than not, a certain hormone will be more present than the other. Even so, there are mutations that cause males to have higher estrogen than most others in their demographic and females to have more testosterone. Even beyond that, there is the environment a person grows up in, which can radically change who they are.

The terms "male" and "female" aren't even entirely obsolete, as they are appropriate terms to identify an individual by their genitalia (which is useful when people wish to procreate)

However, it's gender roles that I believe are unnecessary. More than anything, I disagree with the practice of teaching males to be strong and females to be gentle. People should instead come to be who they are without intensely standardized expectations.
Also, in case you weren't aware, there is a difference between sex and gender...

Sex- Either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions

Gender- The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones)
